Having fun at a Vermont country fair

This fall, go where the locals go - to the fairgrounds.

Visitors to Vermont are always seeking ‘the inside knowledge’ and want to know what ‘the locals’ do for fun. When it comes to fall in Vermont, that means a visit to one of our many agricultural fairs and festivals.

Vermont is an agricultural state and our many fairs and festivals are a reflection of that heritage. From horse pulls and livestock demonstrations to farm product competitions, the richness of our farm culture is still strongly evident. These traditions also have a sense of whimsy that is seen in competitions for who can grow the biggest pumpkins to pig racing.

Among our great fall fairs and festivals are the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction Aug. 23 to Sept. 1, the Vermont State Fair in Rutland Aug. 29 to Sept. 7, the Guilford Fair Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, and The Tunbridge World’s Fair Sept. 11-14.

Vermont is home to a wide variety of agricultural products, and most feature a harvest-time celebration in fall. Vermont produces nearly a million bushels of apples annually and is best known for its tart, juicy, McIntosh variety.

On Oct. 11 & 12, the South Hero Applefest and Craft Show in South Hero will draw thousands for a feast of fall flavors and a showcase of interesting handmade crafts. Another great apple event is the Dummerston Apple Pie Festival on Oct. 12 that attracts visitors from far and wide. Get there early; it lasts only until all 1,500 pies are sold or eaten.

The Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival in Essex Junction on Sept. 13-14 is Vermont's premier fiber event. Visually stunning hand dyed wools, fine fibers, and specialty foods from more than 80 vendors are on display along with demonstrations and workshops.

Amidst the splendor of Vermont’s fall foliage you can re-connect with the farm at one of our many agricultural fairs and festivals. Find out more by visiting the Vermont Travel Planner.
